HADDINGTONSHIRE
TRANENT,
CLADSMtUR WITH PENSTON, ORMISTON, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
TPRANKNT, a town and post village in the parish of that name, is 10
X miles E. from Edinburgh, 18 w. from Dunbar, and 7 w. from Had-
dington ; situated on the main road from the latter town to the Scottish
metropolis, at the head of elevated ground ; the North British railway
passes about a mile to the north. The town consists of a street running
from the west to east along the line of the public road, with another
-diverging from about the middle of it. Many of the inhabitants are
•engaged in the adjacent collieries, which have been wrought in this
quarter from the very first discovery of coal in Scotland, whilst others
are occupied in agriculture. A branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland
is established in the town. The church , which stands at the foot of the
town, is a plain edifice with a square tower ; Colonel Gardiner, who fell
in the battle of Prestonpaus, was interred in it. There are also a Free
church, erected in 1S14, a United Presbyterian church, built in 1S2G, and
handsome public schools. Near the southern boundary of the parish is
Elphinston Tower, once a baronial residence ; and in other parts of the
parish are the ruins of "Waterfall side Castle, Seton Castle, and the re-
mains of a once collegiate church. Acreage of the parish, 5,919. Popu-
lation in 1881, 5,198, of which the village contained 2,235.
Gladsmuir is a beautiful arable parish, rising in a gentle acclivity
from the south shore of the Firth of Forth. The parish church and
school stand on the main road between Haddington and Tranent nearly
four miles west from the former town and three east from the latter.
The district abounds in coal, and several pits are wrought at Penston,
which is the principal village in the parish, and chiefly inhabited by
colliers. George Heriot, the founder of the hospital at Edinburgh, is
said to have been a native of this parish, and Dr. Robinson was its
clergyman, while engaged in writing the " History of Scotland." From
the proximity of the hamlet of Gladsmuir to the scene of the battle of
Prestonpaus, that conflict was called by the Jacobite party " the battle
of Gladsmuir." The population of the parish, the acreage of which is
7,043, was in 1881, 1,747.
The parish of Ormiston lies in the western past of the county ; it is
chiefly level, under the best state of cultivation, and well enclosed and
planted. The village is situated in the northern part of the parish, at
the distance of two miles and a half north of Tranent, and consists of
one spacious street, with a cross in the centre. A monument to the
memory of the late Dr. Moffat, missionary to South Africa, had recently
been erected in this his native village at a cost of upwards of £200,
which was raised by public subscription. The parish church stands a
mile and a half to the south-west, and Ormiston Hall one mile south of
the village. One mile further, on the summit of an ancient eminence
called Dodridge Law, are traces of a Danish camp. Acreage of the
parish 3,444. Population in 1881, 1,026.
