LIMEKILNS,
BRUCEHAVEN, AND CHARLESTOWN.
LIMEKILNS with Brucehaven is a small seaport, in the parish of
Dunfermline, its post town, 3 miles s. of that town, situated on the
north bank of the Firth of Forth. It was at one period a place of con-
siderable trade, but at tbe present day its harbour is chiefly made use of
for the mooring of vessels. Shipbuilding is carried on at Brucehaven
shipyard. There is a congregation of United Presbyterians and a
public school here. Population in 1881, 698.
Charlestown is a village a short distance from Limekilns, and
also in the parish of Dunfermline, its post town, from which it is four
miles distant. It is the property of the Earl of Elgin, who has also es
tensive lime works in the vicinity, from which large quantities of lime
are exported annually ; it is likewise the shaping port for several of the
adjacent collieries. The harbour, which was formed by the above noble-
man, is now the property of the North British Railway Company, and
affords excellent accommodation for the loading and unloading of ves-
sels. Two manufactories for salt and an ironfoundry are among the
other businesses of this flourishing little place. There is also a public
school here. Population in 1881, 632.
