COLINTON,

CiOLINTON, or Collingion, is a village and parish, the latter lying
I at the base of thb Pentland Hills, part of which it includes.
The grounds rise beautifully from the vale of Oerstorphino, and are
finely cultivated, enclosed, and planted; the water of Leith passos
through them, and its banks are here romantic aud wooded. The
church aud manse of Colinton, standing in the midst of lovely
scenerv, are four miles from Edinburgh. Bonally Tower, the seat
of tho 'late Lord Cockburn, is in this parish, and is now the resi-
dence of Mrs. Hodgson. The manufacture of paper is carried on
extensively, and the district abounds with limestone and freestone.
On the lands of Coniston, which lie 10 the east, are vestiges of a very
extensive encampment, near which is a rude massive block of wliiu-
stone, called " Camusstoue," said to indicate the burial place of
some Danish commander. On these lands the fountain for the
Edinburgh water cistern was first erected. Logan-house Hill, in
this parish, is a considerable eminence, rising upwards of 1,5110 feet
above the level of the sea. Slateford is a village in this parish.
Acreage of the parish, 5.640. Population in 1881, 4,347.
The parish of Cukkie is'bouuded by Corstorphine and llatho on
tho north, Colinton on the west, and the Pentland Hills skirt it on
the south. Through the low grounds runs the water of Leitb, and
ou its northeru banks, six miles distant from Edinburgh, stands
the village of Corbie, through which the road to Lanark passes.
The church is erected on a very commanding situation. The manu-
facture of paper and snuff prevails in this p.irisu to some extent,
the former particularly. Ou the estate of Maleny, beyond Carrie,
and rising above the bauks of the Leii b, is Lennox Tower, anciently
the residence of the family ot Lennox, as well as the occasional
one of Wary Queen of Scots. At a short distance from it, on the
opposite bank of the river, ate the ruins of anotl er ancient edifice,

once the mansion of the Skenes, of Currie hill. Tho parish also
contains the house of Baberton, which is remarkable as having
been used as a hunting seat by royalty at two distant periods —
first by James VI. of Scotland, previous to his accession to the
English throne, and secondly by Charles X. of France, after his
expulsion from his dominions iu 1830. Acreage, 11,103. In 1881
the parish had a population of 2,390.
Kirknewton, about nine miles from Edinburgh, is a small vil-
lage and parish ; the latter, which includes the abrogated parochial
division of Cahler Clere, is bounded on tho south and west by Mid-
Calder, on the east by Currie and Ratho, and on the north hy Slate-
ford. In the burial ground of the church, which is about half a mile
distant from the village, lie interred the remains of the celebrated
Dr. William Cnllen, who was proprietor of the estate of Ormiston-
hih, where he introduced, so early as the year 1758, an improved
mode of culture. The river Almond, the water of Leitb, and the
great Glasgow road intersect the parish, which abounds with
excellent limestone, aud contains some tine seats and pleasure
grounds; oue of-these is caLled Meadowbank, once the residence of
a late senator of the College of Justice, entitled Lord Meadowbank,
who was one of the chief improvers of this neighbourhood. Popu-

Balebno is a village iu the parish of Currie, on the water of
Leitb, and situated about six miles from Edinburgh. There is a
Hoard school iu the village, also mills for the manufacture of
paper. Hermiston is a village iu the above parish. Population in
1881, 474.
Juniper Green is a small village in the parish of Coliuton, and
about three miles s.s.w. of Edinburgh. Popuuitiou iu 1881, 1,018.
