KILBIRNIE AND NEIGHBOURHOOD.
KILBIRNIE, or Kilburney, is a populous village in that parish,
district of Cunninghame, 64 miles w. by s. from Edinburgh, 20
s.s.w of Glasgow,the like distance n. of Ayr,and 3 from Beith ; eligibly
situated on the banks of the Garnock.in the heart of a fine country,
and within a mile of the loch of Kilbirnie, which extends two miles
in length by half a mile in breadth. The importance of this village
has been greatly augmented by the flax spinniDg, linen thread
and fishing-net works of Messrs. W. & J. Knox. A branch of
the Clydesdale Bank, Limited, is established here. Glengarnock
Iron Works is an extensive concern, for the manufacture of pig iron
and basic steel, situated about a mile and a quarter to the south-
east of Kilbirnie. These works, which employ about two thousand
persons, including those engaged in raising coal for the use of the
furnaces, are superintended by Mr. James Samuel, the acting
manager. Tho workmen inhabit a newly erected village, and are
conveniently supplied with the necessaries required from a store, at
market prices. A large number of hands are also employed at the
factory of Messrs. Paton, Brown & Co. near to the Kilbirnie Railway
station, manufacturers of winceys, flannel shirtings, skirtings, iSx.
Kilbirnie is also noted for its manufacture of fishing nets, by
machinery, six firms being now engaged in this trade. There are
also two rope works, belonging respectively to Messrs. Robertson &

distant, at Glengarnock, but a new branch from the joint line at
Bar mill, on the Caledonian and South- Western joint line to Kilmar-
nock, is now in course of construction, the terminus to which will
be in the village of Bridgend. It is expected to be open for traffic
about the end of 1886.
The old castle of Glengarnock Is perhaps one the most ancient,
as well as the most stately, ruins in Ayrshire; it is supposed to
have been the residence of the once famed family of De Morville,
which flourished in great splendour during the reigns of Alexander
I., David I., Malcolm IV., and William the Lion ; they held the high,
office of constable of Scotland, and were lords of Galloway and
Cunninghame. There likewise exist the extensive ruins of the old
house of Kilbirnie, long the residence of the ancient family of Craw-
ford of Kilbirnie. At the present time, the estates of Kilbirnie are
possessed by the Earl of Glasgow. Congregations of the Established
Church, Free Church, United Presbyterian, and Roman Catholics
have their respective temples for worship. The parish of Kilbirnie
comprises 10,835 acres, and had, in 1871, a population of 4,953
persons, and in 1881, 5,243 ; of this number the village contained
3,405.
