ST. NINIANS.

Hill, is ft large stoni;. (..?rnied the "Bored Stone," having a hole in
the top in which the .Scottish king inserted hia standard on the
day of buttle. The height called the Gat Craig Hill, from which
the English king watched the progress of the battle, has been
almost quarried away. About half a mile from the village of Ban-
nockburu, at MtLTON, is pointed out the remains of the miller's
house to which James III. retreated from the battle of Sauchiebum
(fought in 1498), about two miles further to the southwest. The
places of worship are the Established and Free churches, and a
United Presbyterian chapel. Two fairs are held in Bannockburn
— ou the second Tuesday of June and October (old style.) Ban-
nockburn, with Mum, contained in 1371 a population of '2,564.
Cambusbarron is a village in the parish of St.Ninians, situate one
mile north-west from that place, and about the same distance west
from Stirling, An extensive woollen mill belonging to Messrs R
Smith V Son,gives employment to the majority of the inhabitants. In
tlie immediate neighbourhood there are also some extensive lime-
kilns. Public Board schools were erected hero in 1875, at a cost of
^4.000. Population in 1S71, 1,236.
About three miles from Bannockburn is the village of East Plean.
containing a hospital for the accommodation of old and indigent
men, more especially soldiers and sailors. Colonel Francis
Simpson, of East Plean, who died in 1831, was th« donor, having
bequeathed upwards of ^3,000 for the purpose. Ths establishment
contains about thii-ty inmates, who are fed, clothed, and have a
small allowance of pocket money ; the trustees granted the land
on which a church has been erected in connection with the church
of Scotland.
