DIRECTORY.
town, find forms a highly interesting object in the prospect from
the river. Tlie En,st parish possesses fi place of worship in Ref?ent
street. A new church for this parish is now in course of erection.
It is in the Gothic style of architecture, built of stone, at a cost of
upwards of ^4,000. There is an Episcopal (English) church in
Union street. Tlie Free church has nine places of worsliip, and
there are buildings connected with the various other de-
nominations, a list of which will be found in the directory
of the town. Greenock Academy is a large establishmaut for the
education of both soxes. It is under the supervision of a rector
and lady superintendent and seven assistant masters and two mis-
tresses. There are six pablic schools under the School Board. A

I at a co^t of £9,030, which will accommodate about 900 children ; and
I there is also in course of erection another public school in Shaw
1 street, at a cost of £4,500, for 700 children, and one at Ladyburn, at
I a cost of £2,000. The weekly market is held on Friday, and there
' are two annual fairs, one taking place on the first Thursday in July,
the other on the fourth Tuesday of November, and horse and cattle
markets twice a year— on the Friday before Glasgow Whit-.Monday
fair, and on the Friday immediately preceding Kilbarelian fair.
The population of the three parishes, according to the returns for
1871, was as follows:— West, 33.141; Mid, 9,592; East, 17,061. The
town numbered at the same date 57,831 inhabitants.
