JRROL IS a panahin the .arse of Gowrie, 5}» miles in length tionary legend, it is certain that the noble family of Hay takes the
and nearly three m breadth, stretchmg across the carse from tho title of Eai-1 of Errol from the appellation of the parish. The small
foot of the hiU to the banks of the Tay. The soil is rich and fertile | ^lu^gg named after it is 10 miles E. of Perth, occupying a beautiful
andundermostproductive tillage; it 13 also highly favourable to situ.aion on a rising ground, embowered in trees, commamling a
the gro^-th of Iruit trees. The country is intersected with sm.ill progp^ct of the Tay and Carse almost as far east as Dundee. A
tracts of water called " pows, collected chiefly Irom the trenches ; rivuiot flows past to the Tay, and forms a smaU harbour at its

found it necessary to build strong walls to arrest their UBUi*pation.
It is recorded that this district receives the name of Errol, signify-
ing an eastern landmark, from the circumstance of the family of
Hay, who, having fought gaUantly at Luncarty, received for their
services from the king a gift of as much land in the carse of Gowrie
as a hawk flew over. Be this account correct or merely a tradi-

mouth ; and about a mile from" the village is a station on the Cale
donian Railway. The village is gas-lighted. Tho parish church is a
very handsome building on a commanding site ; the tower may be
seen at a considerable distance; there is also a substantial and
capacious Free church, and one for United Presbyterians. Acreage
of the parish 9,507; population in 1871, 2,504, the village number-
ing 918.
