lILBRIDE is a market village and burgh of barnny in the parish
01 its name, situate ou the road from Glasgow to Muirkirk,
eight miles from the former city, the like distance n. from Strath-
aven. between 6 and 7 s.w. from Hamilton, and 45 w. by s. from
Edinimrgh. The parish, which comprehends the abrogated one of
Torrance, contains some cxtens^ive limeworks, and coal also lies
beneath the surface. The places of worship are the parish kirk, the
United Presbyterian church, and the Free kirk. Kilnride has pro-
duced several eminent men, among whom are found Dr. William
Hunter, and his brother, Mr. John Hunter, the celebrated anatomist
and physiologist. There are two good schools — the Board school in
Kilbride, and one at Maxwelton, a short distance from the town,
the latter being endowed by tlie late Sir Hugh Maxwell, Baronet, of
Calderwood Castle. A market is entitled to be holdeu here on
Monday. The cattle show, which is held on the sec')nd Friday in
June for Clydesdale horses and Ayrshire cattle, is th« onlyfair that
takes place in East Kilbride. East Kilbride parish, which embraces
22,7G0 acres, in 1871 contained a population of 3,861.

been met witli, which when opened have always been found to con-
tain human bones and instruments of war. In the house of Castle-
milk, which is noted for its line eituatiou, Mary Queen of Scots is
said to have lodged the night before tt:e battle of Langside. There
