METHVEN,
GLENALMOND, MONEDIE, REDGORTON, TIBBERMUIR, TRINITY GASK, AND ABERDALGIE
IVIeTHVEN is a very neat village and parish— the
former six miles west from Perth ; situated on the high
road to Crieff, from which it is distant eleven miles.
It possesses a branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland, a
subscription library, containing neaily 2,000 volumes,
and a body of freemasons; there is likewise an agricul-
tural society, who holds two meetings annually, which
are very respectably attended. The Perth, Almond
out England and Scotland. Among the most munificent
benefactors were the Duke of Buccleuch, the late Sir
John Gladstone, Bart., the Right Hon. W. E. Glad-
stone, and the Right Rev. Charles Wordsworth, the
first warden of the college. The chapel, a building in
the decorated style of Gothic architecture, 136 feet
long by 52 feet wide, with a heiehtof 70 feet, was
erected at a cost of more than £8,000., at the sole ex-
Valley, and Meihven Railway affords communication pense of the Right Rev. C. Wordsworth. The council
with the principal parts of the kingdom. The ancient consists of eighteen members £ namely, the seven
church of Methven was collegiate, being founded 1433,
for a provost and seven prebendaries, by Walter Stuart,
Earl of Athol, one of the youngest sons of Robert II.
About a mile from the village is Methven Castle (the
residence of William Smythe, Esq.), distinguished in
Scottish history as the place where King Robeit was
defeated by the English army under the Earl of Pem-
broke, in i306. In the parish is also Balgowan, the
residence of William Thomson, Esq. But, perhaps,
the most interesting object in the parish is the grave
of the celebrated ' Bessy Bell and Mary Gray,' whose
beauty and seclusion from the world are the subject of
an admired Scottish melody. Fairs are held on the
first Thursday in May and fourth Thursday in October.
Trinity College, Glenalmond, on the hanks of the
Almond.is ten miles fiomPerth.and four miles from the
Penh, Almond, and Methven Railway; was projected
in the year 1841, and opened in the year 1847. It was
meant to assume the double purpose of promoting a
proper collegiate training for the divinity students of
the Scottish Episcopal church ; and of establishing in
Scotland a large public school, after the general model
of the older English endowments. Both departments
have now been ip full operation for several years. The
site on which the college stands was presented by
George Pat ton, Esq., of the Cairnies. The funds for
the buildings, which have already cost upwards of
£50,ono, were raised b.v a general subscription through-

Scotch bishops, with three Presbyters, and the
following eight laymen : — the Duke of Buccleuch, the
Earl of Home, the Right Hon. W. E. Glads'one, M. p.,
Sir A. Edmonstone, Bart., Sir P. M. Threiplanri, Bart.,
Sir M. R. Shaw Stewart, Bart. M. p., W. Smyihe, Esq.
of Methven, and W. P. Dundas, Esq. The resident
society consists of a warden, a sub-warden, a tutor in
theology, and four other masters, who are assisted by
visiting masters for special purposes.
The parish of Monedie is a small district, compre-
hending a square of about two miles, bounded by the
parish of Auchtergaven on the north, and by that of
Redgorion on the east and south. There are, properly
speaking, no hill* in the parish but only rising grounds
which run northward and southward from the banks
of the Shockie. Until lately Monedie was annexed to
the parish of L"gie Almond.
Redgorton parish is about six miles in length by
two in breadth, extending along theTav and Almond;
besides which livers there is the Shtickie stream, and
several other rivulets, each propelling considerable
machinery in the district through which the waters
pass. It is bounded on the north by Auchteigaven
and Kinclaven, on the east by Scone, on the south and
south-west by Tibbermuir and Methven, and on the
west by Monedie.
Tibbermuir (or Tippermuir), is a parish of about-
the same extent as Redgorton ,and is a'maiiu factoring
