DOUNE, DEANSTON, AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
Stirling, and Dumbarton afford entire specimens. There
still remains one huge square building, the wails of
which are forty feet high and ten feet thick, togeiher
with a tower which rises above the lest to the height
of eighty feel, ascending proudly over the lofty trees
that encompass the place, and overlooking a country
eminent in beauty and fertility to whatever direction
the eye may be turned. The fine old bridge which
crosses the Teith a little above the castle was erected
by Robert Spittal, a native of Stirling, who had amassed
a fortune by being tailor to Margaret of England,
widow of James IV: this princess was frequently an
inhabitant of Doune Castle, and the unfortunate Masy
Queen of Scots is also "-aid to have resided some lime
in it. The parish of Kilinadock comprises a district of
.great fertility ; the laud upon the banks of the Forth
and Teith pro nice abundant crops of every species of
grain : from the level margin of the former river the
ground rises gradually to the Grampain mini' tains,
which foim the northern boundary of the parish ; the
face of the country here is delightful, with many
romantic features. A short distance from Doune is the
small village >>f Deanston, maiiry supported by the
cotton manufacture before mentioned. Fairs are
held in Doune on the second Wednesday in May, the
last Wednesday in July, the first Tuesday and Wednes-
day and the fourth Wednesday in November.
/OUNE is a respectable and thriving village in the
parish of Kilmadock and district of Mwnteith, 44 miles
w.N.w. from Edinburgh, 35 s.w. from Penh, 19 s.
from Crieff,9N.w. from Stirling, 8s.e. from Callander,
4 N. from Thornhill, and the same distance vv. from
Dunblane. The Dunblane, Doune, and Callander
Railway possess a stalion here. The town occupies a
pleasant situation on the north bank of the Teith, and
consists principally of three streets, radiating from a
centre, where the market cross stands. Doune was
formerly noted for its manufacture of Highland pistols,
which branch has long become extinct. The cotton
manufacture is extensively carried on ; and th re are
established in Doune branches of the ' Union Bank of
Scotland,' and * Central Bank of Scotland.'
In 1S26 a new parish church was eiected; its style
is Gothic, with a handsome tower; the interior is or-
namented with a beautiful pulpit, particularly worthy
of notice: for this public work the parishioners are
indebted to the Earl of Moray, the patron and chief
heritor of the parish, and owner of Doune Castle, once
the family seat of ihe Earls of Monteith. The ruins
of this once noble castle stand in the immediate neigh-
bourhood, upon an elevated peninsula formed by the
junction of the Ardoch watei with the Teith. To judte
from the massiveness and extent of its remains, the
castle appears to have belonged to that fi>st-rate order
of Scottish fortresses of which those of Edinburgh,
