BLAIR-ATHOLE AND BRIDGE OF TILT,
OLA1R-ATHOLE is a small village and parish, in- ■ reduced in height by the attacks of the Highlanders in

Athole signifies pleasant land, and Blair of Athole, woods and waterfalls three miles to the west of the

vale of Athole. The district is 45 miles in length, and ral distinct falls, rushing through a rough perpeiidicu-
30 in breadth, and the parish is 24 miles from n.e. to | lar channel, the binks of which are covered with fine
s.w., aml20from N.tos. It liesou the north-west High- ! firs planted bv the late Duke, in compliance with the
lands of Perthshire, bounded on the south by Fort-
ingall, Fosse, and Moulin, and on the north by Inver-
ness and Aberdeenshire, and contains a large tract of
highland territory, the mountains of which are almost
covered with lange and beautiful woods, interspersed
with fertile vales (which are in a high state of culti-
vation), lakes, and rivers, the principal of which are
Loch Garry and Loch Loch, the Tummel, Tilt, and
Garry, all abounding with a variety of fish. The vil-
lage is situated on the north side of Garry, 20 miles N.w.
from Dunkeld, on the Inverness road. Within a short
distance of the village is the noble old Castle of Blair-
noyv called Athole House, the ancient family resi,
deticeof the Dukes of Athole. The mansion is a long
'narrfew building, three storeys high (formerly much
i^gbet-), and a place of considerable strength, but

branch of the Union Bank of Scotland is in ope-
ration; and in the village is also au excellent hotel

proprietor.
In the parish of Athole is the beautiful little village
of the Bridge of Tilt, separated only from Blair
Athole by the water ot Tilt, which is crossed by a neat
bridge, that gives a prefix to the name of the place. It
consists of a single row of neat houses, with a com-
fortable-looking inn, and its pretty rural aspect is em-
bellished by the beautiful residence and grounds of J.
P. M'lnroy, Esq. The scenery around, too, is very
