LINLITHGOW AND NEIGHBOURHOOD.
JLilNLITHGOW, popularly pronounced Lithgow, is
an ancient royal burgh, the capital of the shire and
parish of its name, and the seat of the presbytery of
Linlithgow; 16 miles w. from Edinburgh, 31 E. by N.
from Glasgow, 8 E. from Falkirk, and three and a half
from Bo'ness; seated on the bank of a fine lake, and
on the Epinburgh and Glasgow Railway, for which
line a principal station is established here. It is chiefly
formed of a single street, which runs east and west
along the south edge of the water. The houses have,
in general, an old and decayed, but yet substantial look,
which indicate that the place at a former time enjoyed
pteat prosperity i and it still possesses a variety of ob-
1018 to
jects that cannot fail to interest the attentive traveller
and impress the mind with an idea of its aacient gran-
deur. Amongst these are the magnificent ruins of
its royal palace, the venerable church adjoining, and
the terrace on which both edifices were erected ; the
beautiful lake, the lofty trees, and the plantations
j scattered over the pleasure grounds of its once-farned
palace. The latter forms a square overlooking the
lake to the north ; it has been one of the noblest resi-
dences of royalty in Scotland; in it the unfortunate
Mary Queen of Scotts was born, 5th December, 1542.
Among the ancient dwellings a particular house is
pointed out to strangers as the place from whence
