IRKPATRICK DURHAM is a parish and village partly aiable; the former character prevailing in the

The parish which is skirted by the Utr water tin its
western side derives its name from the old church
dedicated to St. Patrick, and Durham, a hairnet whete
it stood— the latter appellation signifying the 'hamlet
on the water.' A new church in the Gothic s>vle wit';
a handsome tower, has been erected on the site of the
old church, built two centuries ago. Formerly a
woollen mill furnished employment to many inhabi-
tants of the village, but it is now undisiinguisi ed by
manufactures of any kind, and is a place of no trade
but that which belongs to a few shops, for the recinrn-
cal accommodation of the inhabitants. 'Ihe parish,
which is between nine and ten miles in length, and
about four miles iu breadth, is partly pastoral and
(old >tyle.)
Old Bridge of Ukr is a very inconsiderable vil-
lage in the paiish of, and two miies from Kiikpanick-
Diiiham; -eaten on the hanks of Urr Wat. rand con-
tains hut a few houses and no business wm thy of notice.
Spkingholm is a small ullage one miie from Kirk-
natnck, on the cad to Du'hifties. It contains a small
