CERES AND KEMBACK.

_'ERES (or Cryus), is a parish and village— the
former situated on an acclivity nearly three miles s. E.
from Cupar Fife. The parish is eight miles lung and
from one to tour in breadth ; the surface is hilly, but
in general is subject to agriculture. On the north it
is bounded by Cupar parish, on the east is Cameron,
on the south Largo, and on the west Cults. Flax
spinning and weaving a few linen fabrics employ some
of the inhabitants of the parish. The old house of
Scotstai vet, once the family tesidence of the Scots, one
of whom wrote a remarkable little work entitled—
•The Staggering State of Scots Statesmen,' is wiihin
the parish, and occupies a conspicuous situation on the
top of the high grounds, which bound the house of b'ife
on the east. The house contains a museum of anti-

stands in an elevated situation, has a castellated square
tower, which is seen at a considerable distance. Fairs
are held on the last Tuesday in March, the 24th June,
and the 20th October.
The parish of Kemback is nearly of triangular
figure, with its broadest side to the Eden, and mea-
sures ahout_ three and a half miles in breadih, and
length. It is one of the richest and most beautiful
districts in the country ; out of 1850 acres more than
1500 are fine arable land, aud there are many fine
plantations in different parts of the parish. Belies
the Eden it is watered by the Ceres stream. The
church stands about a mile and a half from Ceres
village, and three from Cupar. Fairs last Tuesday in
March, second Thursday in J une, aud second Thursday
in October.
