WESTftUTHER, HOUNDSLOW AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
Wi
ESTRUTHER, is a parish, chiefly in the Lam-
mermooi district— the village, a small one, is 32 miles
S.E. of Edinburgh, 8 from Lauder, 6 w. by N. from
Greenlaw and 5 N. from Gordon; situated on the
road between Lauder and Dunse. The parish, which
is six miles in length bv four in breadth, is under the
best process of husbandry. Spotiiswoode— the fine
residence of John Spoltiswoode, Esq. is in this parish ;
Wedderli< — the seat of Lord Blantyre, is in the neigh-
bourhood, and the ruins of ively Castle— the walls of
which are pretty entire, stand on the north eastern
corner of the parish. It was one of those castellated
mansions of residence and defence that were com-
mon on the borders before the union of the two
crowns, in the reign of James VI. There are two
places of worship— one under the establishment, the
o,ther a, Free church. There are al-o a Free church
school and a parochial one. In this parish is the vil-
lage of Houndslow, a straggling assemblage of dwell-
ings on a barren heath.
