BUCKIE, RATHVEN, PORT GORDON, PORTEASIE,
B,
AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
UCKIE is a village, or small town, and flourishing
fishing station, in the parish of Rathven, 20 miles w.
from Banff, 7 E. from Fochabers, and 6 w. from Cullen,
situated on hoth sides of the burn (or brook) of Buckie;
one part belonging to Colonel Gordon, of Clunie, the
other to Sir William Gordon, of Letterfourie. The in-
habitants are mainly engaged in fishing, and are famed
throughout Scotland tor their industry, and hardihood
in braving the perils of their avocation ; as a natural
consequence, their services are eagerly sought at the
several herring-fishing stations on the Moray Frith.
The only harbour is a small basin excavated out of the
rocky shore, and sheltered by a slight timber break-
water. The places of worship are the parish church, a
chapel of ease, an Episcopal chapel, and a Free church
—the latter, a handsome building, in the Elizabethian
style, was erected chiefly through the praiseworthy in-
strumentality of the Rev. Robert Shanks, its respected
minister.
Port Gordon is a village on the sea coast, about a
mile west from Buckie. Its inhabitants are exclusively
occupied in fishing and the ship coasting trade; they
employ stake and bag nets for the capture of salmon,
which ate here abundant, being in the immediate vici-
nage of Speymouth. A large quantity of corn is
shipped annually from this port, and it is hence that
the district, to a considerable extent inland, is supplied
with coals and salt. A narrow rivulet separates this
village from that of Port Tannachie.
Porteasie (or Portessie), is a small coast village,
about a mile east from Buckie , it is of some conse-
quence as a boat-building station.
The parish of Rathven extends about 10 miles along
the coast of the Moray Frith, by from 3 to 5 in breadth.
The greater portion of the land is hill, moss, and moor,
but the more level parts, near the sea, are arable and.
fertile, being greatly enriched by sea manure; audio
some parts the eye is relieved by the appearance of
thriving plantations. Throughout the district the sup-
ply of> limestone, sandstone, and slate is abundant;
and the memorials of antiquity are numerous, the
Danish ' cairn' being the most general.
