by the small river Gadie -a stream celebrated by Arthur
Johnston in his elegant Latin poems. In several places
towards ihe south there is found a species of greenish
coloured amianthus, which is easily cut, and formed by
the common people into snuff-boxes and other trinkets,
which have a very beautiful appearance. Several re-
mains of diuidical temples, cairns, and an aocient en-
campment, are pointed <>ut. In the parish is a church
<»f the Establishment, a Free church, and a Congrega-
tional chanel.
Monvmusk parish is about seven miles long, and
from four to five broad ; and is distant from Inverury
e>«ht miles. Monymusk House, the seat of the Grant
family, is an eknant building on the right bank of the
Don. environed by fine plantations. The village is
well huili, in form of a square, with the church in the
centre, and the houses being constructed of granite,
the place altogether has a remarkably neat and clean
aspect. A market or fair is held annually on the 29th
of August.
Oyne, a parish likewise in Garioch district, is of an
irregular fjt>iiie, stretching about six miles in length,
by from two to^hree in breadth; it is mostly of a fer-
tile and cheering aspect. Aberdeen is about 25 miles
distant, and Huntly 14. In this parish may be seen the
ruins of an old castle, which tradition states to have
belonged at one time to the family of Leith.
Premnay parish is 24 miles from Aberdeen, and
extends four miles in length, by from one to two in
breadth. It is hounded by Insch on the'north, Oyne
on the east, Tough and Keiu on' the south, and lies on
the north side of the hill of Bennochie. 'The land is
chiefly arable, and the greater 'part "of it is enclosed,
Rayne parish lies on the left bank of the Urie, be-
twixt Culsalmond on the north-west, and Daviot and
the Chapel of Garioch on the south-east; it extends
about four and a half miles from the Urie, by a breadth
of from two to four miles. Except a small eminence,
covered with heath, on the north side of the parish,
the surface is flat, with a few rising spots on the banks
of the Urie. The district on the whole has a pleasing
appearance, and is ornamented by plantations. Iu the
central part of the parish stands the village of Rayne,
and on the public road, along the Urie, is the little post
