CaoB=iHiLL, it is situated three mika and a half from Coatbridge.on

of Lanarkshire, having Kirkintilloch and New Mooklaod on the
oast, New Kilpatrick on the west, Campsie on the north, and the
barony parisli of Glasgow on the south. Great improvements have
been mado in this district in agriculture. This progressive benefit
has been accelerated by the great canaJ between the Forth and the
Clyde, which passes through the parish for tive miles, whilst the
river Kelvin washes its northern boundary to tbe extent of six
miles. The NorUi British and Caledonian Railways pass through
this parish. The discov-ry of coal on the estate of Calder, and coal
ftnd ver/ valuable lire-clay on that of Garnkirk, has materially en-

complete miinulactory of fire-clay in Great Britain. There are about
5tJ0 men employed in mining and manufacturing the material. The
quality of the iire-clay on this property is quite equal to that ot
Stourbriilge, and the bricks, furnace blocks, retorts and crucibles
find their way in large quantities to all parts of America, Germany,
Holland and Russia. The manufacture of glazed pipes for water
and sanitary purposes and of ornamental articles, such as chimney
cans, vases and fonntains. is also extensively carried on at thi«
establishment. There are likewise two other extensive establish-
