JjAWRIESTON is a ftmftll village in the parish of Balmaghie,
23 miles w. from Dumfries, 10 N. fi-om Kirkcudbright the like dis-
tance s.s.E. from New Galloway, and 7 n.w. from Castle Douglas.
On the north-west the village is skirted byajmouutaiuous district,
■which abounds with various kinds of game; in the east the land is
more fertile. The parish has several small lakes, and a number of
mineral springs ; among the latter Lochenbreok Well is a place of
some resort in the summer. The principal proprietors are Richard
Dunning E. Cuilningham, Esq., William Kennedy Lawrie, Esq. j.p.
of Woodhall, and Graham Hutchinson, Esq., of Balmaghie House.
Three miles to the east stands the parish church. A Free church
is in the village. The parish of Balmaghie contains an area of
21,069 statute acres, and in 1871 possessed a population number-
ing 1,085.

_ i EW ABBEY Is a parish and village in the Union of Kirkcud- 13,199 statute acres, and in 1871 the population was 981 ; of this
