railway station. This district foimerly belonged to the monastery
of luchcolm ; the small island of Iiichcolm now belongs to the
parish of Aberdour— the form of the latter is nearly square, mea-
stiring about three miles and a half each way, and containing 5,974
acres ; it lies along the north bank of the Forth, and is divided into
two districts by a small ridge of hills which run from east to west;
it is a place of considerable auticxuity, and belonged in the twelfth
century to the family of the Euponts, from whom it passed to the
Mortimers by marriage, afterwards to the Douglasses, one of whom
in 1457 was created Lord Aberdoui- and Earl of Alortou, whose castlo,
which stood close to the village, was burnt down by accident about
a century and a half ago. Aberdour la a place of summer resort of
the citizens of Edinburgh and their families, there being good bath-
ing grounds here, and the exposure being sunny and warm. One of
the chief causes of its popularity as a bathing place is the ready
access which is obtained by steam vessels and other means of con-
veyance from the opposite shore. In the village are the Established,
Free, and Episcopal churches; there are also two public schools
and a Board school. Donibristle Park, the seat of the Right Hon.
George Earl of Moray, is beautifully situated at the east end of the
village, overlooking the Forth. There are no markets held here.
Population of the parish in 1871, 1,697.
