EARLSTOUN,

LEGERWOOD, REDPATH AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
IJARLSTOUN (anciently Ercildoun) is a parish and village, the
latter 31 miles s.e. from Edinburgh, 11 w. by n. from Kelso, 18 s.w.
from Dunse, 15 n. from Jedburgh, 10 s.w. from Greenlaw, S}-^ n.e.
from Galashiels, and 7 s. from Lauder. The situation of this village
is at once rare and beautiful, being seated in a rich valley encom-
passed by hills of a moderate height, which are interspersed by
thriving plantations, and in a state of high cultivation; the Leader
river flows on the west of the parish, and the Eden on the east. At
one time the trade of the village audits neighbourhood was confined
to weaving certain fabrics for the Glasgow houses, but now the
manufacturing of woollens and ginghams is carried on, the latter
having never been equalled for excellence of (xi^ality!. At the west
end of the village, situated on the bank of the Leader, may be seen
the ruins of an old tower, which was the residence of Sir Thomas
Learmouth, commonly called " the Rhymer," who flourished in the
thirteenth century. A stone in the wall of the church bears the
following iuscriptiou in ancient characters, " Auld Rhymer's race
lies in this place." Cowden Kuowes, the residence of William
Cotesworth, Esq., -t.p., is an ancient building, standing on the side
of a hill, the locality of which is famous in Scottish song. Thero
are two fairs, on the 29th of June, and the third Thursday in
October, for cattle and horses, and a cattle and sheep market every
alternate JMonday ; also a corn market every Monday. Redpath is
a village in this parish. The parish of Earlstoun has an area of
9,96S acres, and in 1871 contained a population of 1,977, the village
having 1,1(58 of this number.
Legerwood parish extends three miles in length by two and a
half broatl, and contains about 8,789 acres. Its elevated surface is
well cultivated, toing occupied by opulent and practically skilful
farmers, and is adapted, in general, both for crops and pasture.
The village of Legerwood is three miles from Earlstoun, situate on
a cross road off the thoroughfare through Lauderdale. Boonhill,
in this parish, was a signal station dui'ing the late war. Population
in 1371, 525.
