MACDUFF AND GARDENSTOWN,
M.
IN GAMRIE AND DUBFORD.
_1ACDUFF is a sea-port town, in the parish of Gamrie, situated
about a mile east from the town oi Banff, on the opposite side of the
Deveron river, and ou the declivity of a hill descending towards
the sea-shore. This town has risen, since the early part of the
eighteenth century, from being little more than the huttage of a few
fishermen, to a place of respectable size and trade. It is built on
the property of the Earl of Fife, whose fine seat lies in this neigh
bourhood ; and to this nobleman it has been indebted for its chief
improvements and prosperity; through his influence it was created
a burgh of barony by George III., in 17S3, when its name was altered
from Doou to its present appellation; it has from that period in-
creased rapidly in extent and conscqueuce ; it contains two hand-
some churches, Board schools, and a school for poor children of
from this port. There are two branch banking establishments— the
Union Bank of Scotland and the North of Scotland Banking Co,
The greater proportion of the grain produced for twenty miles east
of Macduff is exported hence, as are salmon, cod and herring; and
the country inland is supplied from here with coal, bone manure,
and lime. Several vessels trade with London and the Baltic, the
number of fishing boats is very considerable, and in the curiug of
fish tiiore are some respectable establishments, and many of the
inhabitants obtain in this branch comfortable and even lucrative
employment. The town is governed by a provost, bailies and coun-
cil; and it has a weekly market on Tuesday. Population in 1871,
3,912.
Gardenstown is also a small seaport village in the same parish,
both sexes— the latter, called the "Murray Institution." from its ; eight miles east of Banff, and fourteen west of Fraserburgh; an
Established church, and one for the United Presbyterians, together
with two schools, are in the village. Population in 1871, 717.
The parish of Gamrie extends about eleven miles, by an average
breadth of about two and a half. The coast is bold and precipitous
and indented with caverns. The land is partly under tillage and
partly in pastm-e. Thriving plantations greet the eye in several
quarters, and other beneficial improvements are in progress in this
parish, the greater part of which belongs to the Earl of Fife. In
1871 the quoad sacra parish of Gamrie contained 2,649 inhabitants.
having been founded by a Mr. Blurray, of London, a canvas manu
lacturer, and a native of Macduff, in 1849; there is also a town house
and gaol. The church occupies a conspicuous position on the
eminence ; and Lord Fife has ornamented its precincts with a cross,
which is highly effective at a little distance. The same nobleman
has munificently expended a vast sum in the erection and improve-
ment of the harbour, which is now considered one of the best on the
Moray Frith ; as a station of the herring fishery, it is exceedingly
valuable, a great supply of that fish being obtained and shipped
