GaRIOCH, Ohapei, op flAEiocH, or Looie-Durno, is a district of the Don, and surrounded with a park and pleasure grounds,
and parish lying in the centre of the county, 20 mUes from laid out with great taste. finvinnl, cnmnrehends a
Aberdeen, 18 from Huutly, and 5 from Inverurie. It is 8 miles n LEsr.ip, a pariah in the distuet of Gnuoch, compr^ends a

Clumv parish is in the district of Kincardine-O'Neil, situated church and a Congregational^ clmpel.
In the parish is a chm'ch of the Establishment, a Free
, Congregational chapel.
MoNYMUSK parish is about seven miles long, and from four to flvo
Cluny and Castle Fraser, both erected in the beginning
16th century. The castle of Chiuy has still a double barred iron
gate, with massive iron bolts. This is said to have the birth-
place of the " Admirable Crighton."
CULSALMOKD parish is distant from Huntly 10 miles and from
Aberdeen 28. This is one of the most fertile parishes in the shire,
having a flat surface intersected with thriving plantations.
Newton House is the principal residence in tins parish, which
o-itends about three miles both in breadth and length. An
annual fair is held at St. Saibs on Wednesday after last Tuesday

Davioi, a parish ia the district of Gariooh, is 21 miles ^.w.
from .\berdeeu and 5 miles from Inveriu-ie, and is about 5 miles
in length by i m breadth ; the sui-fn.ce is level, and has a aoutli-
eastern exposure. It has two diuidical temples, one of which
forma part of the churchyard. The land is now enclosed ami
very productive. The small village of Daviot contains a church
of the Establishment, and a school belonging to it.
IKSCH is a burgh of barony in the before-mentioned district, 27
miles from Aberdeen. The parish extends o miles in length by 8
in breadth, and is bounded by Culsalmond on the east, Kinneth-
mont on the west, and separated by the water of Une from
Drumblade and Forgue. The burgh and viUage is lighted with
gas supports three banking estnbUshments and a savings bank,
and' there are two churchea with schools in connection. On the
top of the hUl of Dun-o'-Deer are the ruins of an old castle, said
to have been erected by King Gregory the Great. In the most
elevated part of the hUl of Foudland, within this parish, are
extensive ciuarries of line blue slate. Markets are held monthly.
Kemnay parish, four miles and a half in length, and three in
breadth, is distant from Aberdeen 16 miles, and from Inverurie
5. The House of Kcmnay is delightfully situated on the banks

neat and clean aspect. A market fair is held annually on the 2ath

Oyne, a pnrish liliewise in Garioch district, is of an irregular
figure, stretching about six miles in length, by from two to three
in breadth ; it is mostly of a fertile and cheering aspect. Aberdeen
is about 25 miles distant, and Huntly 14. In this parish may be seen
the ruins of an old castle, which tradition states to have belonged
at one time to the family of Leiih.
Pkejinay parish is 24 miles from Aberdeen, and extends four
miles in length, by fi'om one to two iu breadth. It is bounded by
Insch on the north, O^me on the east. Tough and Keig on the south,
and lies on the north" side of the hill of Bennochie. The land is
chielly arable, and the greater part of it is enclosed.
Bay.n'E parish lies on the left bank of the Urie, betwixt Culsalmond
on the north-west, and Daviot and the Chapel of Garioch on the
south-east; it extends about four and a half miles from the Urie,
by a breadth of from two to four miles, iixcept a small eminence,
covered with heath, on the north side of the parish, the surface is
flat, with a few rising spots on the banks of the Urie. The district
on the whole has a pleasing appearance and is ornamented by
plantations. In the central part of the parish stands the village of
Rnyne, and on the public road, along the Urie, is the little post
viUage of Old Rayne, distant 24 mUes N.w. from Aberdeen, andO
from Inverurie ; it is in Rayne that the church is situated. An
annual fair is held on the second Wednesday in August, and markets
are held at Meilde Wartle on the Thursdays before tlie 26th May
and 22nd November.
FiiCAPLE is a station on the Great North of Scotland line, and
contains a church under the Establishment and a brancli of the
Aberdeen Town and County Bank. Pitcaple Castle is the seat of
Henry Lumsden, Esq.
