ASSOCIATIONS.
ALLOA YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.
Instituted, May, 1860.
The members of this Association meet in the Christian Insti-
ute, Greenside St., every Sabbath morning at 9.45, and every
Friday evening at 8. These meetings are open to all who may
please to come. The main object of the Association, as em-
bodied in its constitution, is " the improvement of the spiritual
condition of young men." It seeks to arrive at these results
in various ways. At the Friday evening meetings there are
essays, readings, or addresses on religious subjects, and
all of these meetings are opened and closed with devotional
exercises by members previously appointed for the pur-
pose. On the Sabbath mornings typical subjects of Scripture
from the Old and New Testament alternately are taken
up and discussed. A social tea meeting of the members and
their friends is held once a quarter. The Association generally
undertakes the getting up of a course of Sabbath evening
sermons, during the winter months. There are also a Theology
class and a systematic distribution of tracts in connection
with the society. There are at present about 100 members'
names on the roll, the average attendance being about one half
of that number. There are also about 200 associates, the
attendance being also about one-half. The membership is
steadily increasing. The office-bearers are elected annually,
and are for the year 1876-77 : — Hon. President, David Paton,
Esq. ; President, Thomas Campbell ; Vice President, Archd.
Jeffrey; Secretary, John Melvin ; Assistant Secretary. Aw.
Gray ; Treasurer, Peter Taylor ; Leaders of Psalmody, Henry
Ferguson and Archibald Brown ; Harmonist, Andrew Ewing ;
Librarians, Stewart Steedman and Andrew M'Phail ; six
members of Committee — Robert Meldrum, Robert Gow, John
Russell, Wm. Milne, John M'Kee, and Thomas Cuthbert.
The elegant new hall of the Association, which was opened in
July 1873, was built at the sole expense of the honorary
president, and was in the course of 1876 greatly improved in
appearance by having been cleaned, painted, and decorated by
Mr George M 'Clelland.
