patient in hearing the observations of agents in the statement
or argument of a case. His readiness at all times, in season
and out of season, to meet agents, and indeed all who had any-
thing to do with him, was most remarkable, and in the words
of one closely connected with him in his labours, it was a
pleasure to work with him. It is a remarkable fact that during
his long official career, the late Sheriff-Substitute, such was his
punctuality, had never to be waited on for a minute, and
equally extraordinary was the silent patience with which he
often waited on others. It is greatly to be feared that Mr
Clark's over-activity and anxiety in the faithful discharge of
his public duty have had no inconsiderable share in taking him
so soon away from our midst.
But it was not alone in his public capacity as a Judge that
Mr Clark laboured amongst us, for he interested himself to a
very considerable extent in local institutions of different kinds.
He long took an active part in the carrying on of the Alloa
Eagged and Industrial School — an institution which has been
of the greatest service to poor children in the town of Alloa ;
he was for a number of years President of the Alloa Bible
Society ; and, along with some other gentlemen of culture, Mr
Clark contributed much to the prosperity of the Alloa Society
of Natural Science and Archaeology, in which he took a deep
interest, and had been for several years its president. Mr Clark
was at one time Captain of one of the companies of Clack-
mannanshire Volunteers, but he resigned this appointment
some years ago.
The deceased Judge was called away in the midtime of his
years and his usefulness to the silent land, but his name will
long be fragrant in the town and in the court where he lived
and laboured so long. Townhead congregation, by the death
of Mr Clark, were deprived of a much respected and influential
member.
