24 APPENDIX.
In 1807 a collection of Foreign Literature was commenced, which
collection, now greatly enlarged, was in 1834 added to this Library,
and is free to all the subscribers without any additional charge.
The Library contains upwards o± 10,000 volumes, and has above
200 subscribers. Attached to the Institution is a small but admir-
ably selected Scientific and Mathematical Library, composed of about
170 volumes, purchased with £100 given for that purpose by the
late Dr James Watt. Students, though not subscribers to the
Town Library, are entitled to the use of this. Readers of Books
which have been more than a year in the Library, are entitled to
one volume at a time for a subscription of 6s 6d per annum.

This Institution comprises a Library of upwards of 5000 volumes ;
a Reading Room, containing almost all the Metropolitan and an
extensive selection of the Provincial and Local Newspapers, and
nearly the whole of the popular Periodicals, Magazines, and Re-
views of the day — accessible to Mechanics and others on the follow-
ing terms, viz. : — Reading Room, Is 6d per quarter ; occasional
visitors, Id per visit ; Library, Is per half year.
There is also in connection with the Institution Public Baths,
hot, cold, shower and swimming — which can be had from a penny
to sixpence each.
CAETSDYKE MECHANICS' LIBEAEY.
5 East Blackhall Street. — Instituted 1830.
The annual payment is Two Shillings. The management is
vested in a Committee of 21. John Barroman, Preses ; Andrew
Ritchie, Treasurer ; Daniel Macbeth, Secretary.
Duncan MArthur, Librarian.
The Library contains nearly 3000 volumes, and has upwards of
600 readers Open Monday, "Wednesday, and Friday evenings,
from half-past 7 till 9 o'clock.

Opened in 1820. Terms, £1 12s 6d yearly, paid in advance.
Strangers residing in the Town for not more than six weeks ad-
mitted gratis.
