Amalgamated Society of Engineers— Objects— The mutual protec-
tion and assistance of members in cases of accident, sickness, or want of
employment. Greenock First Branch meets in Trades Hall, 10 William
Street, every alternate Monday evening from 7 till 9 o'clock. James
Fyfe, referee ; James Browning, 24 Lyle Street, secretary. Greenock
Second Branch meets same hall every alternate Wednesday evening.
James Maven, referee; John Roxburgh, 25 Lynedoch Street, secretary.
Greenock Third Branch meets same place every alternate Tuesday
evening. John Laurie, referee ; William Strachan, 59 Belville Street,
secretary.
Associated Blacksmiths Society, No. 2 Branch, Greenock. Meets
every second Monday in the Trades' Hall, 10 William Street, at 7.30
p.m. Andrew Mitchell, secretary, 9 Nicolson Street ; Archd. White,
treasurer, 20 Tnverkip Street.
Associated Carpenters and Joiners of Scotland — Instituted, 1861. —
The Society was originated for the support of sick, infirm, and disabled
members, for interment of deceased members, insurance against the loss
of tools and maintenance and advance of trade interests. The Greenock
(United) Branch meets in the Hall, Highland Close. Committee meets
every Tuesday at 7 p.m. Monthly meetings, first Tuesday of every
month at 8 p.m. Secretary, John M. Lauder, 21 Nelson Street.
Auchmountain Boys' Society. — President, John Forbes; treasurer,
John Whiteford ; secretary, James Hughes, 35 Ingleston Street.
Bible Society — Instituted 1807.— John M. Iiutcheson, president;
Dugald Campbell and James Grieve, vice-presidents ; Rev. Alexander
D. Grant, secretary; James Paterson, treasurer; James M'Kelvie &
Sons, depositaries ; with a committee of 18 members. Representative
Director, D. D. Adamson.
Burns Club, The Greenock, was instituted in 1802, and is the oldest
in existence. — The Club has a suite of rooms with library and portrait
gallery at 36 Nicolson Street. Competitions are held annually, when
prizes are awarded school children for proficiency in singing and
reciting the poems of Burns and other Scottish Bards, and for a general
knowledge of Scottish literature. There are also wild flowers competi-
tion held in autumn, open to school children, when prizes are awarded
for the best collection of wild flowers, grasses, ferns, bouquets of wild
flowers, window plants, &c. The funds of the club are spent entirely
upon charitable or educational schemes. The Right Hon. Lord

D. T. Holmes, B.A., and John M'Clure, vice-presidents ; A. T.

Charitable Society for the Relief of the Casual Poor — Instituted
1861. — Sir Michael R. Shaw Stewart and James Stewart, patrons ; ex-
Provost Rodger, president; ex-Bailie Anderson and Matthew Hill, vice-
presidents ; J. C. Hart, National Bank, treasurer ; James Nicoll, 2 Bank
Street, secretary ; and an acting committee of 28 members, with power
to add to their number. The object of the society is to procure funds
for urgent cases of casual destitution, without interfering with the opera-
tions of the Parochial Board or other charitable institutions. The
•distribution is effected by distributors acting under the directions of
conveners, of which there is one for each ward in town.
