YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION.
Instituted 1839.
The Association Building is situated at 17 West Stewart Street.
Office-bearers 1894 — Robert Binnie, Esq., honorary president ; James
Kennedy, president ; Henry Story, vice-president ; William Cooper, jr.,
secretary; John J. Colquhoun, treasurer; James A. Love, corresponding
secretary, 2 Hamilton Street ; John Macpherson, reading-room secre-
tary ; William Sinclair, librarian. This Association has for its
object the spiritual, intellectual, and social improvement of its members,
and of the young men of Greenock. Weekly meetings are held in
various places. An evangelistic meeting is held every Saturday night
at 8 o'clock for young men. A register of lodgings is kept. There
are also Reading Room and Library in the Institute open to the public
at the following rates : — Annually, 5s ; half-yearly, 3s ; quarterly,
2s ; members of kindred associations, 3s 6d annually ; apprentices,
2s 6d annually. Young men coming to reside in the town are cordially
invited to join the Association.
TEMPERANCE INSTITUTE— 19 West Stewart Street.
The Institute embraces a most complete suite of Halls and Com-
mittee Rooms. The Large Hall is capable of holding about 1000,
Lower Hall about 250, Lesser Hall 100, and are largely used for
Lectures, Public Meetings, Concerts, Soirees, &c. Ex- Bailie John
Lang, chairman of trustees ; hon. treasurer, Mr Win. Smith ; secretary,
Mr William D. Thomson ; Institute curator, Miss Margaret L. Shearer.
GREENOCK SEAMEN'S FRIENDS' SOCIETY.
Instituted 1820.
Robert Kerr, Esq., president; Harry King, Esq., treasurer; M.
M'C. Brown, Esq., secretary; John MTver, Esq., assistant secretary;
with 25 directors; William Smith, chaplain ; John Swan, officer. This
society has a Seamen's Chapel, at Sailors' Home, I Dock Breast, seating
350, in which Divine Service is conducted at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. each
Lord's Day. A Reading Room and Library are open daily from 9 to 9,
free of charge. Loan Libraries to all foreign-going ships— about 200
are thus issued in the year. It has a depot where the Scriptures are
sold at reduced prices in various languages. The Chaplain also
occasionally visits the vessels in the Roads, especially emigrant ships.
SAILORS' HOME, 1 Dock Breast.
Instituted 1852.
John Ritchie, superintendent. Committee of Management — The
Provost of Greenock, the Chairman of Harbour Committee, the Collector
of Customs, and the Shipping Master, with the president, treasurer,
secretary, chaplain, and seven members of the Seamen's Friends'
Society. The Home has accommodation for 80 seamen, and is fitted
up with every convenience and comfort.
The superintendent is agent for Shipwrecked Fishermen and
Mariners' Society.
