PREFACE.
Very great exertions have been used to increase, in every possible way, the
utility of the Post-Opficb Edinburgh and Leith Directory for 1844-45.
By a new method of taking up the names, which has been adopted this year, the
General Alphabetical arrangement has been increased by ten additional closely
printed pages, embracing upwards of One Thousand names beyond what was
contained in any previous publication ; while, at the same time, a much greater
degree of accuracy has been attained : and although from this cause the publica-
tion has been a little delayed, yet it is hoped that the greater perfection to which
the Work has been brought will more than counterbalance any inconvenience that
may have arisen from the delay, and which in another year will not take place. The
Professions and Trades' Directory,
Besides the usual emendations, has been revised as to arrangement, and great care
has been taken to place every person under the proper class of profession or trade
to whichoach belongs. The
Street Directory
Has undergone a complete revision; and every Street, Square, Place, Court, and
Close, has been put in strict alphabetical arrangement, with directions where they
are situated, and the names of all parties residing in them put vmder each separate
head ; thus obviating the difficulty which has been so often complained of, as to tlie
finding out any place wanted in that part of the Directory. Much pains have been
taken to render the
County Directory
more correct and complete than formerly. The
Postage Directory
Has been entirely remodelled ; and a New and Universal List of places abroad has
been given, in which is shown the days of despatch from Edinburgh, the different
routes by which letters can be sent, with the rate of Postage, in accordance with the
treaties recently concluded with Foreign Powers. The
Conveyance Directory
has been revised ; and to the names of the Carriers have been added the hours as
well as the days of despatch from Edinburgh and Leith. In short, every thing
has been done to render this year's Publication acceptable and useful to the public ;
and the Editor trusts that his endeavours will meet with that encouragement which
has been so liberally bestowed on his former labours.
