24 FOREIGN AND COLONIAL MAILS.
September 3rd (the 4th falling on Sunday) Evening, via Southampton and Sin-
gapore

The following instruction has been addressed to all Postmasters.
General Post Office, April, 1853.
Her Majesty's Government having terminated the Contract with the
" Australian Royal Steam Navigation Company," for the conveyance of
the Mails to Australia, via the Gape of Good Hope, a Mail Packet will no
longer be despatched from Plymouth on the 3rd of every alternate Month
as heretofore.
Provision will be made for the conveyance of Mails to Australia early
in the months of June, August, October, and December, of the present
year, respectively ; and due notice will be given of the days appointed
for the departure of such Mails.
In the alternate months of May, July, September, and November,
Mails for Australia will continue to be forwarded by the route of Singapore,
according to the present arrangements, on the 4th of the Month via
Southampton, and on the 8th via Marseilles, or when those dates fall on
a Sunday, on the 3rd via Southampton, and on the 9th via Marseilles.
MAILS FOR JAV A.
A direct Packet communication, ouce in two months, having been estab-
lished between Singapore and Batavia, in connexion with the Overland In-
dian Mail, all Letters, Newspapers, &c, addressed to Java, or any of the
Dutch Possessions in India, will in future be forwarded (unless otherwise
specially directed) with the Mails for India made up for despatch, via Mar-
seilles, on the evening of the 7th of each of the months of January, March,
May, July, September, and November.
Mails for Java to contain such Letters, &c, as may be directed to be sent
" via Southampton," will also be made up on the morning of the 3d of each
of the month above enumerated.
For rates of postage— which must in all cases be paid in advance — on Let-
ters and Newspapers for Java, or any other of the Dutch possessions in
India, see Java.
PAPAL STATES.
Letters for the Papal States, when specially addressed to be forwarded in
the Prussian closed Mails, via Belgium, may in future be sent either un-
paid or paid to their destination, at the option of the sender. Those not
specially addressed are sent, as a rule, via France.
