The provisions of the Police Act are, for watching^
lighting, watering, cleansing, and paving the streets, —
erecting and maintaining a police-office and watch^
houses, — a bridewell, — prevention, detection, and punish-
ment of crime, — and for other necessary matters.—^
The expence to be defrayed by an assessment of Is.
per pound on all rents of whatever kinds of property
(churches and schools excepted), from £2 to £5, and
of Is. 3d. per pound upon rents of ^5, and upwards. —
The payment of the assessment is in)perative; but those
to whom the benefit of the act is not extended, cannot
be assesse.«l to support it. Penalties are incurred and
summarily recovered for infringements of the provisions
of the act. The act is to be carried into execution by
two Cominissioners elected for each ward, and a body of
the Magistrates, including the Sheriff-Depute, and his
Substitute for Dundee (if one is appointed); in all thirty-one
or thirty-two, as the case may be. The Commissioners are
annually appointed, and beside the General there are two
Resident Commissioners in each ward, for the manage-
ment of the more important inferior details within their
respective bounds, of which they are chief Constables.
The'povvers and regulations of this act extend over the
royalty of the borough of Dundee, and the whole grounds
and houses locally situate and comprehended within the
following hmits, — viz. within a line commencing on the
east at the river Tay, and running northwards m the line
^f the east march of Ma) field on the lands of Craigie, "to
the southern extreniity (Vf tl^at march; thence along that
march to the turnpike-road leading from Dundee to Ar-
broath; i lence eastward along that turnpike-road until
its junction with the old Craigie Road; northwards along
•that road to the Stohsmuir turnpike-road; acr<^ -j ' .it
road, and from it along thg old road by , the ^—■. -of Aobs^
■hiuir and Clepington, till it reaches rije east Toad to th^
