which cannot be sent in open wrappers, may be enclosed in boxes
(but in such a way as admit of easy examination) or in bags of
linen or in other like material, tied at the neck. Closed bags,
even if transparent, will not be allowed.
5. The name, address, and trade of the sender must be in all
cases printed (not written) on the outside of the wrapper above
the address. If this rule be not complied with the packet will be
liable to be charged on delivery.
6. The number, price, and private business marks may be
written (at the top left-hand corner), but no other writing will be
allowed. Packets infringing this rule will be siircharged at the
letter-rate.
7. No glass bottle, or glass in any form, may be sent; no ex-
plosive liquid, semi-liquid or greasy matter, nor powders of any
kind which may stain or do other damage ; nor any living
creature.
8. Patterns of scissors, knives, razors, and other sharp articles
must be so packed ahd guarded as to completely prevent injury
to the other contents of the Mail Bags, or to the officers employed,
but the packets must at the same time admit of easy examina-
tion. When these requirements are not complied with, the
packet will be stopped.
9. When necessary for securing the due transmission, or de-
livery, of letters, Patterns and Samples may be kept back for the
succeeding despatch or delivery.
10. The Postmaster-General wishes it to be clearly iinderstood
that the Post is expressly intended for the benefit of, and is
absolutely restricted to bona fide Trade Pcttterns and Samples of
Merchandise. Packets not containing hona fide Patterns, and
posted prepaid at the pattern-rate only, will be charged with
double fee deficient postage, at the letter rate together with a fine
of 6d.
Pattern and Sample Post, Foreign.
1. The Pattei^n and Sample Post to Foreign Countries and the
Colonies generally is restricted to hona fide trade patterns or
samples of merchandise. Goods sent for sale or in execution of an
order are not admissible, nor any article liable to Custom Duties.
Patterns and Sample Packets must be prepaid.
2. Patterns or Samples, when practicable, must be sent in
covers open at the ends, and easy of examination. But samples
of seeds, drugs, «S:c., may be enclosed in boxes or in bags,
fastened in such a manner that they may be readily opened.
