Ochiltree lies 4 miles from Cumnock, and 6 miles from Stair.
Population— In 1831, 1562 ; 1841, 1601 ; 1851, 1787. Increase
since 1841, 225. Exteni~\5,3S7 imperial acres, or upwards
of 24 square miles ; length, at extreme point. Smiles — breadth,
5 miles. Boundaries — It is bounded on the south by the parish
of Liew Cumnock; on the north by Stair; on the west by
Stair and Coylton ; and on the east by the river Lugar.
Character — The extent of land under cultivation is 10,242
acres imperial, and the population is agricultural. There is
a reaping-hook manufactory in the village, and some cotton
weavers. The females are engaged in sewing muslin. Mat-
Jsets, ^c. — There is no market held in the parish : the nearest
market town is Ayr. Two fairs are held in Ochiltree — the one
on the second Wednesday of May, the other on the first Tues-
day of November.
