CUMNOCK.
[Cumnock village, distant 15^ miles from Ayr ; 18 miles from Kilmarnock,!
Old Cumnock lies 2 miles from Auchinleek ; 5 miles from
New Cumnock ; and 10 miles from Muirkirk. Population — In
1831, 2763; 1841, 2836; 1851, 3776. Increase since 1831,
1013. Extent— It is 10 miles in length, and 2 in breadth, and
contains about 13,000 Scotch acres. Boundaries — It is bounded
on the west by Ochiltree ; on the north and east by Auchinleek j
and on the south by New Cumnock. Character — In the town
of Old Oumnock, many are employed as weavers, potters and
snufl-box manufacturers. Many are engaged in agriculture,
and the mining population has increased much. Cumnock is
the seat of considerable business. Markets, ^c. — Several fairs
are held annually in the town, in February, May, July, and
October, o.s.
