GRAY'S ANNUAL DIRECTORY.

ON THE ORIGINAL MODEL OF THE EQUITABLE SOCIETY OF LONDON.
The EiGHTEZNTH Annual GknehaIj Court of this Society was held at Edinburgh, within the
Waterloo Tavern, on Monday, ]6th January current; the Right Honoiirabte the Eari, of
RosEBERY, President of the Society, in the Chair.
There were laid before the Court the Report of the Second Periodical Investigation of the Society's
Affairs, as at 31st December last, and the orders pronoiinced thereon by an Extraordinary Court of
Directors, held on the 13th current, allocating the Surplus Funds, in terms of the laws of the Society ;
all of which were, after an eloquent address by the Earl of Rosebery, unanimously approved of by the
Genei'al Court.
On the motion of the Honourable Lord Moncreiff, the thanks of the Court were unanimously
voted to the Directors of the Society, Ordinary and Extraordinary, for their able and successful
administration of the Society's affairs.
On the motion of George Joseph Bell, Esq. Professor of Scots Law, the Coiu't unanimously
approved of the arrangements recommended by the Extraordinary Court, relative to the Ordinary
Court of Directors.
His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch aud Queensberry, as a Member of the Society, then moved
that the Direction for the current year be vested in the following Gentlemen, {all of whom, in terms
of the laivs, are Members of the Society of more than three years' stavcliiiff,) which motion was
unanimously carried, aud the Direction tilled up accordingly, viz. —

The Earl of Rosebery, on the motion of the Right Honourable the Lord Justice-Clerk, having-
left the Chair, which, also on the motion of the Lord Justice-Clerk, having been taken by His
Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, the Lord Justice-Clerk then moved that the
best thanks of the General Court be given to the Earl of Rosebery, not only for his conduct in the
Chair on this occasion, but for the uniform attention which, as Prescs of the Society, his Lordship
has paid to its business from its commencement down to the present time ; which motion having been
seconded by Sir James Gibson-Craig, of Riccarton, Bart., was carried by acclamation, and the
thanks of the Court awarded accoi-dingly ; to which the Earl of Rosebery replied in acknowledgment.
The Chair having then been resumed by the Earl of Rosebery,
On the motion of Sir Francis Walker Dhujimond, of Hawthornden, Bart, and Patrick
Robertson, Estj. Advocate, the thanks of the Court were unanimously voted to the Manager, the
Society's Audita!-, Patrick Cockburn, Est}, and thoir Medical Officer, Dr Duncan, for their
assiduous amd fiutibful discharge of the duties of their respective offices Tlicreafter the Court
