LARBERT,
1]! R Labert, is a small village, three miles from Fal-
kirk and eight from Stirling, beautifully situate on the
side of a hill on the northern bank of the Carroii. The
parish (with wliich that ofDiinipace is iucorpoiated),
contains some gentlemen's seats of thefirst class, among
which is Kinnaird, once the residence and property of
Bruce, celebiated for his travels in Abyssinia, who
was born, who died and was buried in this parish;
his remains lie interred in the parish chuwh-yard ; a
monument of iron, cast at Canon, is erected over liis
grave. At the reftirmatioii an ancestor of this enterpriz-
ing traveller repaired and preached in the old church.
The present place of worship is a handsome modern
erection, with a square tower. Near this place the
gieat Roman road or causeway passes, and about a
quarter of a mile to the west the foundation of a bridge
is visible when the Canon river is low. The famous
Falkirk cattle tryst is held on a moor in this parish,
in the month of October, when from twenty to thirty
thousand head of cattle are exposed for sale.

LENNOXTOWN, and CLACHAN of CAMPSIE,
WITH TORRANCE, AND THK PARISHES OF BALDERNOCK AND STRATHBLANE.
JL?
dENNOXTOWN, or Newtown of Campsie, is a
large village in the parish of Campsie, 42 miles w. of
Edinburgh, 22 s.s.w. of Sterling, and 9 n.n.w. of Glas-
gow; situate in the vicinity of some large collieries,
and print fields, and extensive bleaching grounds occu-
pied by Mr. Cunningham; the Hnrlet and Campsie Alum
Company also have works in the parish, the entire af-
fording employment to several hundred persons. The
' Clachan' or town of Campsie, as it is designated, is
distant about a mile from Lennoxtown, and stands on
the low grounds. A new church, with a square tower,
has lately been erected in a commanding situation near
the centre of the village. The parish of Campsie lies
in the central part of the county, and extends eight
miles in length by seven in breadth ; it is composed of
a fertile strath or valley, bounded by ranges of the
Campsie hills or fells on the north, which are elevated
about fifteen hundred feet above the level of the sea.
The celebrated Clachan Glen, with its romantic scenery
and waterfalls, in this district, is a place of great resort
in tlie summer ; the proprietor courteously grants per-
mission to strangers to perambulate the grounds, and
even to pluck the fruits and flowers — while, for the ac-
commodation of visiters, there is a commodious inn at
the ' Clachan.' The district is likewise the residence of
several persons of distinction, and ornamented by some
elegant seats ; those of Woodhead and Craigharnet are,
perhaps, the roost conspicuous. The rivers Kelvin and
Glazart pass through the parish, which is also inter-
sected by the two great roads from Kippen to Glasgow
and from the latter city to Edinburgh. The small vil-
lage of Torrance (or, as it is geneially called, ' the
Torrance of Campsie,') is about four miles from Camp-
sie, on the direct road to Glasgow.
The parish of Baldernock (anciently Bathernoch)
is situate in the southern extremity of the county, where
it is bounded by the river Kelvin, and on the south-
west lies the Loch of Baldowie. The parish abounds
with ' cairns,' and similar memorials of early warfare.
The most remarkable of its antiquities is a structure
denominated ^the Auld Wife's Lift:' it consists of
three stones, two of which are laid on the earth close
by the side of each other, and upon the top of these
the third is placed, in the same direction, with their
ends pointed north and south ; the whole are eighteen
feet in length, by eleven in breadth and seven in depth.
In the surrounding ground the roots and stumps of oak
trees have been dug up; and there can be no doubt of
this spot having once been a Druiclic grove, and place
of sacri&ce and worship.
Strathblane parish, as its naraeimplies, composes
the vale of the river Blaue, which pursues a norili-
westerly course through it ; the land of the valley is
exceedingly fertile, and it is embellished by several neat
villas, while the hills are clothed with natural woods.
The village of Strathblane is three miles and a half west
of the Clachan of Campsie, and four east of Kiilearn.
There are print-works and a bleach-field in the parish.
