SANQUHAR,
WITH THE VILLAGE OF KIRKCONNEL AND NEIGHBOURHOODS.
Sanquhar is an ancient town and burgh of ba-
rony, in the parish of its name, and district of Niths-
dale, 56 miles s. s. w. of Edinburgh, the like distance
N.byE, of Glasgow, .32 e.s.e. of Ayr, and rather more
than 26 n.w. of Dumfries ; situate on the line of road,
up the left, hank of the Nith, passing from this county
info that of Ayr. The town, it is supposed, owes its
origin to a castle of considerable impurtance, the ruins
of which are now to be seen at a short distance to the
south-east, on a high bank overlooking: the river Nith.
It must have been a building of great strenqih, having
towers at the angles, and was surrounde'd bv a ditch.
It formerly belonged to a branch of the family of
Creighton (or Crichton), aiicestf.rs to the Eail of Dum-
fries. The castle, as well as greater part of the land
in the neighbourhood, is now the property of the Duke
of Bucclengh. About a mile from it stat'ids the house
of Eliock, the residence of the familyofVeitch, which
gave a senator to the college of justice in the last ten-
368
tury; this mansion lays claim (which is disputed by
some authorities) to the honour of being the birth-
place of the ' admirable Crichton.' Sanquhar consist-s
chiefly of one main street. The family of Queensherry
has been great patrons of this town, particulaily in
iniproveraeiils on'the roads which pass through or ap-
proach to it. The late duke also erected the town-
hall, at his sole expense ; it stands at the end of High-
sireet, and has a tower, with a clock. Sanquhar is the
principal coal mart in the county, and large iiuHutities
are supplied to Dumfries and other parts. In this pa-
rish, as well as that of Kiikconnel, the seams of this
article of fuel are most valuable; the field extends
seven miles in length and two and a half in breadtir,
and the veins are Irom three feet eight inches to four
feet six inches in depth. The Duke ot Buccleugh is
the chief proprietor. At the eastern extremity of the
parish, about nine miles from the town, are the valu-
able It ad mines of Wanlockhead, belonging likewise
