along the Esk is considered to he the finest in the
south of Scotland. The Hollows is a small village,
about a roile and a half troni Canonbie ; near to whici),
on the east, is GilUavekil tower, and on the west is
Hollows tower. Tiie Duke of Buccleugh is sole pro-
prietor of this parish.
EsKDALEMUiR is a uiountaiuous pastoral parish, on
the noith-eastern border of thecountv.and intlied'Stiict.
of Esk<lale; the nianise, wiiich is aWout the centre of
the pari>h, is fourteen miles from Langiiolin. A very
small portion of Eskdalemuir is under cultivation ; the
principal land proprietor is the Duke of Bucclengii.
Ttie Pftvish of KwES, situate on the eastern extre-
mity ot the countv, is reinaikable for its beautiful
ranges of green liills, covereil with verdure to their
summits, and the clearness of the river, which affords
excellent trooting. Numerous plantations, on the pro-
peities of the Duke of Buccleugh and Mr. Beattie (ot
Meikledale), add additional beauty to the lovely ap-
pearance of the sweet dale of the Ewes.
Westerkirk parish is also situate near the eastern
boundary of the county, about six miles from Lang-
liolni. Nearly the whole of this portion ot the district
is devoted to pasture for sheep and black cattle; but
there are several elegant villas, which in some decree
relieve its otherwise monotonous appearance. The
church stands on the left bank of the river Esfc. Sir
Robert Walpole was a native of this parish.
