pel of St. Bride. A nominal weekly market is held on
Wednesday ; and fairs on the first Wednesday of May,
third Wednesday and foliowine; Thursday of July, and
last Wednesday in October, all chiefly for cattle.
The villaije of Port Bannatyne is sitnate full two
miles north of Rothesay: it possesses a small quay,
and several weil-furnislud houses; the latter are oc-
cupied principally by families who make this pleasant
village a summer letreat. Half a mile from it is the
ancient castle of Karnes, the family mansion of J. Ha-
milton, Esq., Cnnveiipr of the county. Nearly a mile
to the west is the new church of NoVth Bute, erf ctrd
in 1836", at an expense of £1,000 , defiayed by the
ftlatquess of Bute. The majority of ttie inhabitants
are employed in fishing. 'I'lie population of the vil-
lage, in 1836, was about .300.

burgh, Greenock, &c. airive (by steam boat) every forenoon (Sunday excepted) at eleven, and evening at
eight, and are despatched every morning from six to seven, and noon from twelve to two; thcv arrive on
Sunday in the afternoon at four, and are despatched in the morning at .seven. — Letters from Port Bannatyne
arrive (by foot post) every afternoon (Sunday excepted) at four, and are despatched every afiernoon at one.
