APPIN, BALACHELISH, SOUTH,
WITH THE ISLAND OF LISMORE, AND THEIR VICINITIES.
PPIN, or, as it is more generally called, Port prietor, Charles Stuart, Esq. of Balachelisli, in co-
partnership with l)is brother Hem y atid their faiiier,
Capt.Dugnid Stuart), who expoi t annually about 10,000
tons of this ariicie, to all parts of Scotland and the
north of England ; it is a blue slate and of a quality
equal to any produced in Britain ; there is a conve-
nient quay for its shipment, and in connexion with
the works these gentlemen generally employ 300 men.
Within a mile of the quarries, westward, is an episco-
paliHii chapel ; and a small one for Rotuan catholics.
Appin, is a small village in the united parish of Lis-
more and Appin, and comprised in a district of the
latter appellation; situate on the point of a small
promontory, on the eastern shore of Loch Liniihe ;
13 miles N. of Oban, 15 n.w. of Bonawe, 35 N.w. of
Iiiverary, 136 N.w. of Edinburgh, and 29 s s.w. of Fort
William. The parish is of great extent, chit fly occu-
pied as grazing farms; but the village contains few
houses, and is a mile and a half off the main road.
About half a mile south is Airds, the seat of Sir John I er( cied in 1836, stands at a short distance from the
Campbell, Bart., of Atdnamuichan ; and three mile* | village. About a mile above the quarries, on the mar-
north is Appin House, the seat of R. Downie, Esq. of i gin of Loch Leven, near the opening of a glen super-
Appiii, vvhcise mansions are surrounded by some of latively wild and romantic, and almost embosomed
the finest timber on this coast. The church is nearly \ by tiees, is the residence of Ewen Macdonald, Esq.,
two miles north of the village, and tliere is a parlia- j of Glencoe ; and opposite, on the north shore of the
meniary church at nine iniles distant, iu the same loch (which here is fully a mile broad), in the county
direction, on the way to Balachelisli Soutii. On a
small island near Portnacrosh, full two miles north,
is the ancient and partly dilapidated castle of Stalker;
it is nearly square, of considerable lieight, and evi-
dently has been a place of some strength ; and though
its area is not extensive, it occupies almost a moiety
of tiie little islet on which it stands. About half a mile
fiom Stalker castle, on the island of Shuna, are the
still more ruinous remains of another fortress of this
description. A fair was formerly held at Port Appin
on the Fiiday before Martinmas, but it now possetses
trifling attraction ; there is another and a well-at-
tendt-d fair, however, for black cattle, held at Shean-
ferty, neatly three miles to the south, on the Friday
of Inverness, is Callart, the newly-erected mansion of
Sir Duncat) Cameron, Bart., of Fassfern and Callart,
contiibuting in an eminent degree to the completion
of the beauty of the landscape. At Balachelish South
ferry is a very comfortable inn and posting-house;
and in the immediate vicinity, at the entrance of a
sequestered valley, is Balachelish House, the residence
of the Messrs. Stuart; westward three miles from
which is Ardsheal, the seat of Capt. Robert Stuart.
LiSMORE is an island in Loch Linnhe, twelve miles
in lengtli by about two in breadth ; it is situate be-
tween Appiu and Morven, and belongs to the same
united parish with the former place. Great quantities
of excellent lime, as well as oats and potatoes, are
before the last Wednesday in the months of May and ! exported from hence. There is a small village on this
October ; but as the latter fair fall on the same day i isolated fertile .spot, called Port Ramsey ; and at the
as that of Oban, it will probably be altered ere long. | southern point, on a ridge of rocks piojecting some
Balachelish South is a straggling but populous : distance into the channel, stands a lighthouse, almost
village, on the south shore of Loch Leven ; about i in a direct line between Oban and the souijd of Mull;
three miles e. of Balachelish Ferry (iu the same pa- j the li^ht is on a high round pillar of stone masonry,
rish), and 14 n. of Port Appin. Near the village, at and is an excellent and most useful beacon. On this
the foot of the Glencoe hills, are the extensive slate i island are also a church, the remains of Dtjune or
quarries of the Messrs. Stuart (wrought by the pro- > Auchindoune castle, and the ruins of a Danish foit.
