hour during the day.
RATHO.
JL HIS small village is situated about eight miles w.
by s. from Edinbuigh, and three and a half from
Kirkliston, nearly in the centre of its parish, and
contiguous to the Union Canal, by which communi-
cation it enjoys a ready access to the capita!, and
the intermediate district. It contains a handsome
church (of which the Rev. James Clason is minister),
a spacious parochial school room, and a distillery.
The parish, which is about four miles long, and three
broad, lies in the middle between the Pentland hills.
and the Frith of Forth. The ea>it part is flat and
fertile, but the ground rises gradually towards the
west. Dalmahoy, the principal residence of the Earl
of Morton, and Hatton, formerly belonging to the:
family of Lauderdale, both beantitui and elegant seats,
are in this parish : these, with the plantations of
Addiston, give a rich and pleasant aspect to the coun-
try. Agriculture is carried on with spii it and success,
of which Mr. M'Knight first set the example. The
hills of Dalmahoy and Kaimes abound with freestone.
