Letters for the East Indies, Cape of Good Hope, the Mauritius, and Ceylon, pay twopence in addition to the
inlnnd postage to London, if below three ounces in weight ; if above three ounces, one shilling per ounce
in addition to the inland rate. Newspapers pay one penny each.
Both letters and newspapers may be sent otht-rwise than by post to India.
Letters containing patterns, open at tiie ends, not exceeding one ounce, pay only as single letters, provided
no writing is contained in the letter, except the price of the patterns enclosed, and the name and address of

Ship letters brought by ships, not being packet boats, eightpence for every single letter, m addition to the

littters put into any post-office to be conveyed by any vessel, not a packet, previous payment of one shilling if
from the interior, and eightpence if posted at the port where the vessels sails, is necessury. Letters are also
sent, when specially addressed, by piivate vessels, from any port or place within the United Kinsdom to any
otht'r place within the same, subject to a ship letter postage of eightpence, in addition to all inland rates.

Money Orders.— Vox- transmitting small sums hy post, granted and paid by Mr. R. Young (agent for the Money
Order Office), the olfice is open from eleven in the forenoon until three in the afternoon.
r^'ote.—Vov the accommodation of gentlemen of the law, bankers, merchants, and others, an arrangement,
svtiictioned by the Post-master Gtneral, is made at this office, upon a similar plan to that adopted in London,
ifor keeping letters in private boxes until sent for. Applications for this purpose to be made to the clerk at
the window.
Privilege of Franking.— Ho member of parliament can send more than fi?«, nor receive more tlian^^^en letters
free "daily. One ounce is allowed for a frank ; when above that, it is charged with postage.
Soldiers' and Seamen's letters, under certain regulations, pay one penny at in-gi\ing for single letters only.
If one penny is not paid, or a double letter, full postage is charged. Letters to such places as have no
regular packets are charged threepence, except the East Indies, St. Helena, and Ascension, which are sent
for one penny.
