PORTPATRICK,
JLflsrANT 133 miles from Edinburgh, 89 from
Glasgow, 6| from Stranraer, 35 from Wigtown and
34 from Newton Stewart. This town has long been
the great northern thoroughfare for heland, and
was formerly, with the estate of Danskey, the pro-
perty of Lord Mount Alexander, whose residence
was the old castle of J)unskey, a place of consider-
able strength, as appears from the interesting re-
mams. The estate of Dunskey was acquired from
the Viscount of Airds by Mr. Blair, the minister o^
Portpatrick, and is now enjoyed by his descendants.
An excellent harbour is now making under the di-
rection of John Reunie, esq. for the convenience'
of his majesty's packets ; although a difficult under-
taking, on completion will be a great national im-
provement. Steam vessels are now introduced at
this place, which will greatly facilitate the commu-
nication between this and the sister kingdom.
