gow. It is situated on the southern declivity of a
hill, and is pretty regularly built. Mere are upwards
of 200 looms employed in the manufacture of silk,
Hnd more than double that number in the weavinc;
of cotton shawls, robes, &c. It is in ronteniplation
to erect a cotton mil! h,re, upon a most extensive
scale. A great |)art of the money is already sub-

village is the school liousc with a towci-, on wliich
is the statue of Halibey Simpson, the well known
Scottish piper, who was born in this pai-ish. It
was executed by Archibald Robertson, a younp;
seulpiorfrom Greenock. There are two fairs held
here annually, one on Lillia's day, the third Tues-
day in July old'stylc, the other on Barchon'a day,
the first Tuesday "in December old style, the last is
one of the greatest horse markets u> this i>art of
Scotland.

A
Considerable village in the parish of that name,
S miles from Beitli, 9 from J'aisley, and 16 fiom
Glasgow, it is pleasantly situated on the west bank
of the Loch ; here are two extensive cotton mills,
and a woollen mill, and in the parish are several
very extensive bleach fields. The l^och, from which
the parish takes its name, is two miles long and one
mile broad, it was formerly much more extensive
than at present, there having been an embankment
made across one part of it, by which means several
Jjundred acres of land have been gained ; in the cen-
tre of the Loch is the ruins of Peel castle. In the
parish are the remains of several castles, of which
EHiston castle, the tower of Auchnibothy, and the
castle of Barr, are the mast considerable, the wall*
of the latter are entire. There is a masonic lodge in
the village, and justice of peace courts are held on
the tirst Saturday in each month. There are three
annual fairs, the first is called the trades' race, on
the first Tuesday in May ; the farmers' lace on the
' second Tuesday in June"; and the fair of Hill on th«
