KINCARDINE
JlSa baroiiy In the parish of Tullialan, on the north
bank of the Frith of Forth, 5 miles from Alloa, 4
from Culro.ss, 6 from Torryburn, 10 from Dun-
fermline, and 15 from North Qucensferry. Its
•taple branch of trade was the making of .salt, but
It IS tiow nearly given up. The building of vessels
is carried on to a great extent, particularly of
that descripuou adapted for the coasting trade.
1 he making of ropes and sailcloth has been lately
introduced ; two companies are established for
thi« purpose. A commodious harbour and aii ex-
«ellent qiiay have been lately made here, whicli, to-
gether with an excellent and safe anchorage ground
111 the Forlh, render it a desirable refuge for vessels
In distress. A company is also formed for the pur-
pose of insuiing their own vessels, in which all who
enter are bound to insure. Its harbour will admit
vessels of from 3 to 400 tons burden. It i.s built
in a very irregular manner, and may truly be said
that 'it is without form and void' of any external
bcauiy. The streets are very narrow and dirty,
being seldom swept. The parish church is at a
small distance from the town ; it is a venerabltj
building, and contains some ancient monuments.
There are .some extensive distilleries in the neigh-
bourhood. A fair is held on the last Friday in July,
old style.
