^ Town in Perthshire, distant from Edinburgh 4l
miles, Perth 32, Auchterarder 14, Crieff 16, Logic 6,
and Dotine 3. It was formerly the see of a bishop,
founded by David I. The aspect of Dunblane is
bleak, though the surface is pretty level, but chiefly
moor ground. A great part of the venerable cathe-
dral, which yet remains, serves for a parish church,
and ha.? an excellent library. It has been once an
elegant structure. The bishop's palace is in ruins.
— The river Allan, which runs through the parish,
abounds with excellent trout. At Kippenross there
is a plane tree, supposed to be the largest in Scot-
land, the trunk being 27 feet in circumfciTiice. The
parish of Dunblane extetids about nine miles in
length and six in breadth. The Sherriff moor, on
DUNBLANE,
which was fought the famous battle, in November,
1715, between the royal forces, under the Duke of
Argyle, and the rebel army, under the command of
the Earl of Marr, is distant a few miles from the
town. Dunblane is a Scottish peerage, by the title
of Viscount, in the person of the Duke of Leeds. It
is at present governed by a sheriff substitute. A
sheriff's conrt is held every Wednesday; also a jus-
