STONEHAVEN, ORSTONEHIVE.
A Sea port, and the county town of Kincardine-
shire, is situated on the coast, where the Cowie
and Carrou unite their waters, as they flow into
the sea, about 15 miles S. by W. of Aberdeen, G6
fiimi Banff, 35 from Arbroath, 10 from Inverbervie,
52 from Dundee, 67 from Perth, and 23 from Mon-
trose. It is composed of an old and a new town,
the former lying on the south bank of the Carron,
adjacent to the harbour, the other on a peninsula,
formed by the Cairon and Cowie. This last is laid
out upon a regular plan, having broad streets, and
a square in the centre. The harbour is a natural
basDii, sheltered on the south east by a high rock,
which runs into the sea, and on the north east by
H quay, very convenient for the unlading of goods ;
but it is neither very capacious nor safe, theeutrauce
being obstructed by sunken rocks, so that it is ca-
pable of considerable improvements. Stonehaven
derives its principal support from the shcritf court
of i.lic county, which is held here every Wednesday
and Friday ; there is also a justice of peace court,
for the recovery of small debts, on the first Monday
<if every Month. Stonehaven is a burgh of barony,
of which the jurisdiction is by the charter vested in
the magistrates, chosen by the superior and feuais.
The turnpike road from Montrose to Aberdeen
passes throu;'h the town, and auother road runs
directly to Perth, through the valley of Strathmore.
The castle of Duiniottar, now in ruins, is situated
on a perpendicular rock, 150 feet above the level of
the sea, about tlnee acres in extent, and almost
separated from the laud by a deep chasm. The
entry to the castle is by a square tower of great
strength within high water mark. It forms one of
the most majestic luins in Scotland : the buildings
still occupy one half of the ground. This castle
stood a long siege under Cromwell, and surren-
dered at last ou honourable terms. It was ofteu
used as a state prison, and several of the non-con-
forming Piesbyterian clergy were confined in it. It
was built during the contest between Bruce and
Baliol, by an ancestor of the Marischal family ;
and so great was its reputation for strength, that in
1651 it was used for the depository of the regalia
of Scotland, to jji-eserve inem from the English
army. A market is held at Stonehaven every Thurs-
day, and from Martinmas to Candlemas (on Thurs-
day) for cattle and grain. There are five fairs held
here, viz. on the Thursday before Christmas, old
style, Thursday before Candlemas, old style,
second Thursday in Jantr, second Thursday in Au-
gust, and first 'rhursday in November.
