TOariYBURN.
dfiftsl)iif-
1G2.'}. The Gaelic word Torry signifies " the King's
Height," aud with the addition oi burn, tlie Scotch
word for r'wulet, is now the genettil Dame in use. —
The situation of this place is healthy and pleasant ;
and the inhabitants are of a peiicoable disposition.
The principal employment of the men is weaving;,
which is superintended by agents for Glasgow houses;
the women are chiefly occupied in tambouring. —
There is no magistrate, or any particular offifcer to
govern the town, the inhabitants "doing that which
is right in their own eyes." From the rocky state
of the shore it has been found impossible to form a
harbour here ; but a pier has been ei'ccted at Cromr
bie point, where passengers and goods for this ])lace
are lauded, and whence steam boats ply daily to
Leith, &c. A fair is held on the second Wednesday
in July. As this is not a regular post town, all let-
ters should be directed by way of Dunfermline.
POST OFFICE.— Post Mastei-, Mr.Wm. Saunce,
at half-past eight, and arrives every morning at three.
The post to Dunfermline leaves every night
