ABERDOUR.
Jl HIS palish, which forms a square of about
3i miles, and lie.? along the north bank of the Frith
of Forth, is divided intff two districts by a small
ridge of hills running from ea.st to west. The
small island of Inchcolm is in thi.s pari.'sh. The old
castle of Aberdour, tlie property of the earl of
Morton, stands on the eastern border of the parish,
and on the banks of a rivulet, wliich, after winding
beautifully iu front, falls into the Frith of Forth.
T9wards the castle is the elegant mansion of Hiil-
ijide. — The town of Aberdour has a good harbour on
the Forth, ahout ten miles north-west of Edin-
burgh, and i.s a place of considerable antiquity. In
the twelfth century it belonged to the family of the
Euponts, froiH which it went to the Mortimers by
marriage, and afterwards to the Douglases, one of
whom, in the year 1457, was created lord Aber-
dour and eaii of Morton. It is two miles from
Burntisland, four from Kinghorn, and eight from .
Kirkaldy.
