iiL Pleasant village of consIBerable extent, and
in a most delightful part of the country, lies on the
great road from Carlisle to Dumfries and Glasgow,
to which two stage coaches pass and repass every
day. It is in the parish of Morton, and distant from
Dumfries 14 miles, from Sanquhar 12, Carlisle 48,
Kilmarnock 34, Glasgovv 66, Cumnock 30, and
Annan 30. There are three places of worship, viz:
the parish church, a united secession chapel, and a
chapel of relief. The trade of the rlllage is chiefly
domestic, and the onlv establishmeats ai:e a tan-
nery and a brewery, fairs are held on the second
Tuesday in Februai^, the 25th of March, the se-
cond Tuesday in May, the last Friday in June, the
second Tuesday in August, the second Tuesday in
November, and the lust Tuesday in December ; all
old stvle.
POST OFFICE, High street. — Post Mistress, Elizabeth Hunter. Mail to Dumfries is despatched
at half past twelve at noon, and arrives at ten minutes before six at night. A post to Minnihive on Mon-
days, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at half past six in the morning, and returns at a quarter past twelve at
noon. A post to Sanquhar on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at half past twelve at noon, and ii
despatchea at a quarter past six at night.
